2025 Honoree Kara Nelson

The Diaper Foundation - Changing Lives Luncheon Recap
On December 2nd, The Diaper Foundation welcomed 50 guests to the Eldorado Ballroom for the Changing Lives Luncheon — a meaningful gathering to celebrate the mission that has uplifted thousands of Houston families and to recognize the extraordinary individuals who make this work possible.
This year’s event celebrated a significant milestone — over 2 million diapers distributed to underserved families across Houston. Thanks to the generosity of our luncheon supporters, we raised more than $40,000, allowing us to immediately provide diapers to all 35 families currently on our waiting list and extend even more help in the months ahead.
Board Chair Katrina M. Baker kicked off the event, emphasizing a crucial truth: government assistance does not cover diapers, leaving many parents without the essentials required to keep their babies clean, dry, and healthy. Founder and CEO Hope E. Ewing shared how The Diaper Foundation began from her desire to instill the value of giving back in her daughter. While serving the community together, Hope recognized a critical and often overlooked need — families struggling to afford diapers, with no other nonprofit in Houston dedicated exclusively to providing diaper assistance.
What started as a simple act of service has grown into a mission that now supports children all over the Houston area. Hope reminded guests that every diaper is a tangible expression of dignity, love, and compassion — a small item that makes an extraordinary difference in the life of a family.
Leslie Churchwell, The Diaper Foundation’s first recipient, shared a heartfelt testimony about the support she received during a time when she felt overwhelmed and uncertain about how she would provide for her baby. Her story of resilience and the progress she and her child have made since then served as a moving reminder of the lasting impact of this mission.
We were honored to recognize Kara Nelson as our 2025 Event Honoree. Kara spoke about her personal connection to the mission — how, at first, she thought diapers were a “simple need,” but seeing the lack firsthand opened her eyes to the profound impact this work has on a child’s health, a parent’s stability, and a family’s hope.
As the luncheon came to a close, Hope reaffirmed The Diaper Foundation’s commitment to ensuring every family has access to this essential resource and guests to join in advancing this mission forward.
